On Thursday, 21 May 2026, between 7.04 pm and 8.20 pm, a road traffic accident occurred on the Münster-bound carriageway of the A1 motorway, just before the Bremer Kreuz junction, involving a 52-year-old Dutch man. He was driving his Toyota Land Cruiser, to which an animal transport trailer was attached, in the main lane. There were two water buffaloes in the trailer. In the slow-moving traffic, the driver had to brake sharply, causing one of the animals to break through the front wall of the trailer and onto the carriageway. The motorway was quickly closed in both directions in the area of the Bremer Kreuz. Attempts by the animal?s owner, road users and the police officers on duty to recapture the animal failed.
